CONSULTATION ROOM - Nitai, Carrara, QLD

September 2024

This cabin features a 1.5m deck extension, using our new "SAM10 EXTENSION".   While this extension is normally the same footprint than the SAM10,  the owner Nitai decided to half the deck size due to space restrictions in his backyard.  We have posted more information about this below.

Foundation - x2 actually....

This time we had easy access to the build site through a large side fence gate, allowing us to get materials and tools close to site.  The previously installed shed had already been removed, leaving us with a cleared gravel patch perfect for installing one of our steel bases, plus of course the front steel frame extension for the decking.

To enable us to run the decking boards across the entire width of the cabin we needed to install the decking base frame directly on top of the steel purlins instead of across.  This worked very well as this resulted in extremely solid and well supported decking joists.

Start of Build

TERMIFLOOR particle board flooring is the very best floor base layer there is!  It seals the floor of your new cabin, and provides an ideal surface for the installation of your preferred floor covering.

It does not require additional sealing or any other treatments.  Just make sure the side marked "this face down" actually is!

The cut ends of the particle board flooring do not need to be sealed, as they will not be exposed directly to the environment.  The first layer of logs sits beside the floorboards, not on top.

All electrical leads are run at this stage of the construction.  Our industry leading superior log thickness of a full 50mm enables our factory to drill electrical holes through the centre of the logs.

The 1.5m Deck

As mentioned Nitai chose a combined roof and deck extension kit but only wanted it to be 1.5m deep.  This meant a fair few alterations to the existing extension kit, but it all worked out nicely.

The other big plus here was the use of MODWOOD manufactured decking boards in color "SAHARA".  The use of "Cleva Clips" made the installation very easy and eliminated any possible errors.  The boards simply HAD to line up 100% after the base clips were screwed down.

There are two different ways of finishing off the edges of the deck - here the boards were cut long enough to cover the top of the vertical edge board.

To hide the screw tops of the edge board we applied a bit of timber putty, the last image on the right shows this clearly, an effect that disappears when putty dries completely by the sun.

Making progress

Working with solid timber logs is always very rewarding.  All components fit together very neatly, there are close to no issues with warped or split timbers as all logs have been dried to around 12 to 14% water content prior to milling by our European Factory.

When assembling a cabin NEVER cut any logs - they ALWAYS fit as is.  And in the unlikely event that they do not "seem to" fit - refer back to the previous sentence!

Of course, if you ordered an additional window (which we always keep in stock) than the window opening needs to be cut.  But only then.

Nitai opted for second window to aid with cross ventilation.  All our windows open inwards to allow for the installation of fly screens later.

Finishing touches....

After the bulk of the building work has been completed, and the cabin is dried in quite a few smaller bits need to be done.  For example, we install the window handles and hinge covers, plus of course test all windows for proper functioning.  We hang the doors and adjust them to line up properly (the hinges have three different adjustment screws - up / down, in / out and left / right).  As the timber logs will still settle over the next few months the door hinges will need to be re-adjusted occasionally as needed.

The European door locking hardware is supplied to fit all thickness doors, so the screws will need to be shortened to suit.  We also tighten the corner storm bars but these also need re-tightening soon.
