Backyard sheds are a valuable and worthwhile investment - so be sure to upkeep them to ensure they last many years and always look their very best. It's the same what you do for your family home - it needs the occasional home maintenance and repair job and the yearly home spring clean. Your new "SAM10" also needs regular inspections and maintenance.
You don't need to spend a lot of hours on your shed, but there are some basic tasks you can do throughout the the year to ensure that your shed is in tip-top shape at all times. Staying on top of regular shed maintenance tasks will help you to avoid larger, costly repairs, and save time.
Basic Timber Garden Shed maintenance is a simple as taking a look, really. Regular visual inspections from the outside and in is the very first step in identifying any issues that you might need to address. Yes, we know, you fell in love with your new SAM10, we just want to make sure your relationship remains a match made in heaven!
Any surface exposed to the elements will need a bit of TLC, and timber garden sheds are no different here.
Things to look out for is vegetation that grows too close, under or on to your shed, the state the logs are in (cracks? paint peeling? looking dry if previously oiled? etc) and in general making sure that log walls are well protected from wind and weather via proper wood treatments applied.
Like all other components of your SAM10 your roof is designed to last many years. In general, it should not really need a lot of attention.
Depending on your location (i.e. if you are close to the beach), it might over many years develop rust and therefore need replacement.
Check for loose screws and rivets, and that the insulation did not come loose anywhere.
Finally the diamond shaped gable end pieces will need more paint and/or oil than the rest of your timber cabin, as part of these two pieces are fully exposed to the elements on both sides and as such you will need to pay particular attention to these in respect of timber protection measures.
Entering your SAM10 will always feel special. The aroma of pine, the warmth of the timber, the strength of the construction and being 100% weather-tight will always make you feel welcome and happy. Once every now and then look around, up to the ceiling boards, check behind furniture, operate the window and lock up the door of your SAM10 from the inside - make sure all works as it should, and fix anything that needs attention.
The walls will also need a new coat of oil or paint (depending on your initial treatment) but overall the inside needs less frequent applications due to not being exposed to the elements.
We all heard stories of termites (white ants, subterranean ants etc) happily munching away at unprotected wood - and yes, this is something that needs to be taken into account when inspecting your SAM10.
Of course, the appropriate pest treatments were applied during the construction phase either by us or by you (depending on who built it) and for all intents and purposes this will be sufficient to protect your SAM10. BUT - it is highly recommended to keep an eye out for mud trails and other tell-tale signs of termite activities.
The easiest way of having total peace-of-mind is to add your garden shed to the annual pest control treatment list that you would normally get done for your main dwelling.
Depending on your location, we are more than happy to come past every 12 months or so to have a look at the condition of your SAM10.
This service is offered at no charge and covers a 30-minute on-site meeting and assessment of what needs to get done to keep your SAM10 in top shape. You can then decide whether you want to do this yourself or if you would like us to quote on the job. Easy peasy.
